How to manage the screen time for your kids?

From young aged children to 60+ elder people, today, everyone spends almost half of their day using digital devices. This spending of time in front of screens is known as screen time.

Today we are so much dependent on these digital devices, and these habits are leading to ignoring their negative impacts like –

i. Delayed learning in young children
ii. Susceptibility to chronic health conditions
iii. Impaired socializing skills

We all carry mobile phones, laptops, etc., in our bags or pockets, and the high screen times due to these digital devices have affected people’s physical, emotional, and mental health. Therefore, to make a child stronger in every manner, it is important for family members to adopt various methods to reduce high screen times.

Some Ways to manage the screen time for your kids:

1. Creating screen-free areas at home:

Try to create screen-free zones at home, like at the dining table, or at the kitchen, etc., to reduce the occurrences of high screen time. Avoiding screen times, especially at mealtime, can welcome various opportunities like family members can connect more, kids can learn dining etiquettes and conversational skills.

2. Providing alternatives:

Many times, kids find it difficult to utilize their free time by getting involved in some activities. They consume their free time by playing computer games, surfing the internet, watching TV, and many more, and these habits can be improved by providing them with some alternatives.
Parents can help their kids by making their kids involved in various indoor/outdoor activities, such as playing chess, skipping rope, cycling, etc.

3. Fixing their screen time:

Children at their young ages carry a poor understanding in case of time management and this poor time management increases the chances of high screen time. To reduce these chances, parents can fix the screen time for their kids by setting screen time alarms like screen time is allowed only before 10 pm.

4. Shutting down the screens when not in use:

Digital devices’ active screens act like a powerful magnet that attracts one towards them. When the screens are turned, then it may result in losing concentration in studies or in any other fruitful activity among kids, and in reducing such things one should prefer to turn off their screens when they are not in use.

5. Starting the screens for kids as late as possible:

Parents should always try to turn on the screens in front of their kids as late as possible, especially in the morning. Once the screens are turned on, it may become harder to get them off the screens. So always try to encourage kids to complete their daily tasks like completing breakfasts, packing school bags before the screen gets on.

In a survey, it was concluded that the excessive use of screens could alter kids’ brain structures, due to which their learning abilities can be affected.
